Root Canal Therapy and Abscessed Teeth

Root Canal Therapy, or endodontic treatment, is necessary when a tooth’s pulp (nerve and blood supply) becomes infected or inflamed. This condition is also known as an abscessed tooth, and it can cause serious pain and discomfort.

An abscessed tooth is caused by the penetration of bacteria. If a small chip forms in the tooth, bacteria can find its way into the pulp, destroying it. This problem is a grave one and can lead to many side effects and future issues, like:

  • Bitter taste in mouth and/or bad breath
  • Pain when chewing
  • Swelling in mouth and neck
  • Sensitivity to heat and cold
  • Fever
  • Loose teeth
  • Tooth loss
  • Shift of the remaining teeth

It is important to protect yourself from the symptoms and problems that come with an abscessed tooth.

How Can Root Canals Help?

The Root canal treatment may be the only way to save the tooth from requiring an extraction. Root canals consist of removing the nerves that lie within the root of the tooth. If the damaged pulp is no longer within the tooth, the tooth can function properly again without any of the sensitivity.

In a root canal, Dr. Young will make a small hole in the tooth and remove the ruined pulp. He will then clean out the area and the surrounding root canals.

Finally, he will seal and fill the tooth. Often, we will reinforce a tooth treated with root canal therapy with a crown.

Common questions

Frequently asked questions

Can’t find your answer? Ask our virtual assistant in the corner, or call our front desk.

Is Root Canal Therapy Painful?

No, root canal therapy is not typically painful. Local anesthesia is used throughout the procedure to keep you comfortable and prevent any discomfort. Most patients report feeling little to no pain during or after the treatment.

How Long Does a Root Canal Take?

The duration of treatment depends on the severity of your case. Some root canals can be completed in a single visit, while others may take up to two hours. During the procedure, the infected or damaged tissue is removed, and the root canals are cleaned, filled, and sealed. In some cases, a crown or cap may be placed to restore the tooth’s strength and appearance.

Will I Need Additional Treatment After My Root Canal?

Sometimes, yes. Follow-up treatments such as crowns, bridges, or dental implants may be recommended to ensure proper bite alignment and protect the treated tooth from future damage or decay.

Does a root canal hurt?

Root canal treatment is performed with local anesthetic and is typically about as comfortable as getting a filling. It relieves the pain caused by an infected or inflamed tooth nerve.

What are signs I might need a root canal?

Lingering sensitivity to hot or cold, severe toothache, pain when biting, a darkened tooth, or swelling near a tooth can all be signs. Only an exam and x-ray can confirm it.

What counts as a dental emergency?

Severe toothache, a broken, cracked or knocked-out tooth, swelling or infection, a lost filling or crown, and bleeding that won’t stop are all reasons to call right away.
