How Healthy Are Your Gums?

Everyone wants healthy gums and teeth, but how do you know if your gums are really healthy? We can tell your gums are healthy if the whole gums, teeth and bony complex are free of disease. Schedule your appointment with our Arcadia dentist today. Also serving Pasadena and Monrovia, CA.

Gums are the protective layer over the bone which supports the teeth. The gums surrounding the teeth consist of tight fibrous attachments that adhere to the roots of the teeth and underlying bone.

What is Gum Disease?

In a healthy, normal state, gums appear to be pink and tightly fitted around the teeth and when you brush or floss your teeth, they do not bleed. If your gums do bleed without injury, you may be experiencing the beginning stages of gum disease, also known as periodontal disease.

This non-injury bleeding is caused by the constant irritation of the unmoved stick plaque and/or tartar consisting of food debris mixed in with saliva and bacteria that are on the teeth surfaces.

The bacteria put out an exotoxin that stimulates a defense action in the gums. This defense action is the inflammation which causes bleeding, attachment loss and bone loss. This is known as gum disease (aka gingivitis or periodontal disease depending on the severity of the disease).

Gum Disease has also been known to be linked to Cardio-vascular Disease, Stroke, Heart Disease, Diabetes, Rheumatoid Arthritics, Respiratory Diseases, Cancer, Osteoporosis, Alzheimer’s Disease and other systemic diseases. Hence, it is vital to have healthy gums to have good overall health.

If you have noticed signs of gum disease or periodontal disease, like:

  • Bleeding or swollen gums
  • Consistent bad breath
  • Gums that are tender or in pain
  • Teeth sensitive to hot or cold
  • Loose teeth

You should come see Arcadia dentist, Dr. Young, to discuss gum disease treatment. It is easy for Dr. Young to discover if you are suffering from gum disease with a quick OralDNA test. How Does Gum Disease Develop?

Gum disease usually begins with the buildup of plaque—a sticky film made up mostly of bacteria. When sugars and starches from food and drinks mix with the natural bacteria in your mouth, plaque forms. Regular brushing helps remove plaque, but if it’s not cleaned off, it hardens into tartar. Tartar is much harder to remove and can lead to greater damage the longer it stays on your teeth. Plaque buildup can cause gingivitis, which results in inflammation and irritation of the gums around your teeth. If left untreated, gingivitis can progress into periodontitis, leading to the formation of pockets between your teeth and gums. These pockets trap plaque, tartar, and bacteria, which can cause tissue and bone loss if not addressed promptly.

What Are the Risk Factors for Severe Gum Disease?

Several factors increase the risk of developing periodontitis, including gingivitis, poor oral hygiene, tobacco use (smoking or chewing), hormonal changes, recreational drug use, obesity, poor nutrition, genetics, certain medications, weakened immune systems, and health conditions such as diabetes.

Are There Serious Health Effects of Periodontitis?

Yes. Untreated periodontitis can harm not only your teeth and gums but also your overall health. It has been associated with conditions such as heart disease, respiratory illness, and complications from diabetes.

How Can I Prevent Gum Disease?

The most effective way to prevent gum disease is by maintaining excellent oral hygiene—brushing and flossing regularly and visiting your dentist for routine checkups and cleanings.

What are signs of gum disease?

Bleeding when brushing or flossing, red or swollen gums, persistent bad breath, receding gums and loose teeth are common signs of gum disease.

How is gum disease treated?

Treatment ranges from deep cleaning (scaling and root planing) to laser periodontal therapy. Premier Dental Esthetics also offers receding gum treatment.
