One of the oldest cities in the Los Angeles metropolitan area, Arcadia was originally settled in the mid-19th century. In the early 1900s, the town underwent significant civic improvements. Among them, the city’s first library opened on North First Avenue next to City Hall. Additionally, the Rotary Club was formed and received its charter. Other organizations included the Arcadia Planning Commission and the Arcadia Chamber of Commerce. These organizations promoted material resources and encouraged the construction of new buildings.
The 1950s saw a growth in the city. Six schools were constructed and the new Methodist Hospital was built. Arcadia became a Charter City in 1951. Afterward, the housing boom continued through the 1960s. Many of the neighborhoods in Arcadia feature contemporary and shiny residential structures. However, the city is still proud of its original community of homes.
The city has been recognized for its safety, community friendliness, and a wide range of services and parks. Residents and tourists can experience the city’s history by visiting the Gilb Museum of Arcadia Heritage. While the museum has temporary exhibits, its permanent collections focus on the history of the area.
